Interview with Laura Jay Meadows

What three words would you use to describe your art?

Feminine, emotive, playful.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

The women around me! When I first started, my wonderful friends were willing to take and send me pictures but also, the strong influential woman I come across on Instagram. There is such a lovely, diverse community and movement on Instagram supporting body positivity for all shapes and sizes.

Why did you want to do a nude project?

I want to help women see just how beautiful they are on the inside and out. I want to encourage people to feel beautiful in their own skin and see themselves as a work of art! I think it’s quite a liberating project for all those involved.

Who do you look up to in the art world?

Henri Matisse is one of my favourite artists. He kept creating even on his death bed, he always found a way and never gave up. I am inspired by his figure drawings and also the stunning female figures he created out of paper cut-outs. His story inspires you to go with what’s in your heart and to dream big!

What is your favourite medium to create with?

At the moment, I love using watercolours for the fluid nature of the medium. I love not knowing how the painting is going to come out until its dry. I find the whole process very cathartic.

How do you commission a piece of Laura Jay Meadows art?

It starts by being sent a reference photo – these can be in their underwear, bikini or full nude whichever the client feels most comfortable. We then work on finding the colour palette for the commission and quite often I get to hear their stories. Creating personalised artwork is such a wonderful experience and process and brings me so much joy.

Where do you see Laura Jay Meadows in five years?

I want to have helped thousands of women on their journeys to self-acceptance and body positivity. I will have my own studio and gallery space in London with a large and varied team. I would also like to be collaborating with big brands and charities. I am still growing and learning so much as an artist and I am interested to see where I can take it all and continue to develop my style.

What advice would you give to young, aspiring artists?

Creativity is a gift that should be nurtured so give yourself time. Also, you are never too old to start! Determination and hard work leads to success. Work hard, play hard and be a nice person!
